#WoyChat - 2
Woy Magazine co-founder Nathalie Cerin and editor Valerie Jean-Charles had the pleasure of sitting down with critically acclaimed writer Edwidge Danticat on Thursday evening for a #WoyChat centered on art, the immigrant experience, political awareness and the power of memory:
Apply Pressure
In a clear victory for Haitian immigrant activists, the Biden-Harris administration announced that they would be granting Temporary Protected Status (TPS) to more than 100,000 Haitian immigrants in the United States. In a statement explaining the administration’s change in course, Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas stated:
Haiti is currently experiencing serious security concerns, social unrest, an increase in human rights abuses, crippling poverty, and lack of basic resources, which are exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic. After careful consideration, we determined that we must do what we can to support Haitian nationals in the United States until conditions in Haiti improve so they may safely return home.
The blatant hypocrisy in the statement did not go unnoticed. While Biden administration officials have now openly admitted to the precarious situation in Haiti, they still continue to support the Jovenel Moïse regime which has further plunged the nation into waves of senseless violence, economic vulnerability and mass insecurity.
Orphaned by the State
According to a new report released by Réseau National de Défense des Droits Humains (RNDHH), more than 400 children in Haiti have been orphaned after massacres were committed by gangs in the Bèlè and Site Solèy neighborhoods of the capital. Additionally, more than 100 people died during the attacks, with more than 200 becoming housing insecure/homeless:
A Bel-Air 81 personnes au moins ont été assassinées par balles dont 12 femmes. 36 personnes ont été tuées, d’août à décembre 2020 et 45 autres, de mars à mai 2021. 24 sont portées disparues et 18 autres ont été blessées par balles. 165 maisons ont été incendiées, 13 autres ont été pillées, rendant sinistrées 262 personnes qui étaient soit propriétaires, soit locataires. 296 enfants sont devenus orphelins d’au moins un de leurs parents ;

Velinda
Earlier this week, people in Jacmel held a protest to denounce the ongoing kidnapping crisis and demand the release of Jacmel native Velinda Charpentier. The student and a friend were kidnapped in Port-au-Prince while on their way to a restaurant. Charpentier’s mother is reported to have died of cardiac arrest upon learning the news.
According to Le National, despite a so-called truce between gangs orchestrated by the government, there has been no slow-down when it comes to kidnappings:
June 27
As the country grapples with a spike in COVID cases, in addition to the aforementioned casualties and consequences of gang-led violence, the Electoral Council announced that the constitutional referendum will still take place on June 27:
This announcement comes as citizens across the country persist in their actions to denounce the entire ballot initiative, seeing it as yet another tactic employed by Jovenel to bulldoze through democratic foundations and processes to centralize power:
Legal Eagles
In light of the upcoming referendum, the Port-au-Prince Bar Association, this week, held a two-day conference debating “The Rule of Law and the Refounding of the State.” Panels at the event covered topics such as electoral integrity, women’s access to politics, reformation of political parties and land rights. You can catch a replay of the livestreams below:
Schools + Abuse
The condition of girls in Haiti remains precarious, especially as it pertains to sexual violence. As you may recall, months ago, Woy reported that one town in particular experienced a teen pregnancy boom during the country’s brief coronavirus-related lockdown in 2020, with most of the fathers being adult men.
Now, Ayibopost is taking a look at the sexual violence young girls face from male teachers, as reports have shown that a 17-year-old student was impregnated by her social studies teacher in Grand-Anse:
What’s more, it is a trend that can be found nationwide due to the economic vulnerabilities experienced by many female students:
Poto Mitan Mythology
On Thursday, May 20, the Koumbit Fanm Karayib held a detailed discussion on the myth of women being the “poto mitan” or the “pillars” of their communities. While this idea is represented as an honorific title and role, it programs women into carrying disproportionate amounts of responsibility for their communities, while adhering to the Madonna-Whore complex.
Respected sociologist Sabine Lamour was joined by other feminist scholars from Martinique and Guadeloupe to break down how this myth of the strong woman continues to harm many women and girls in the region.
